The world has lost one of its greatest football legends, as the legendary French defender Jean-Pierre Payet has passed away at the age of 82.
Born on May 17, 1940 in Paris, Payet began his career with his hometown club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), before moving to Marseille in 1966 where he would go on to make over 500 appearances for the club and help them win two league titles and two Coupe de France trophies.
During his time at Marseille, Payet was known for his incredible defensive abilities and his ability to read the game, which earned him the nickname "The Swiss Army Knife" due to his versatility on the pitch.
After retiring from playing in 1990, Payet went on to become a coach and manager,Campeonato Brasileiro Action most notably coaching Olympique de Marseille's reserve team and then becoming their manager in 2006. During his time as a manager, Payet helped lead Marseille to promotion back to the top flight of French football in just his first season in charge.
In addition to his successful managerial career, Payet was also a key figure in helping to establish Marseille's reputation as one of Europe's top clubs, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders ever to play the sport.
